Celebrating Chinese New Year

On Friday 5th March, the year 11 girls had the chance to share a Chinese meal together, with their Skills Coaches. The activity was funded by a Jack Petchey award winner who wanted to spend the money on a meal to celebrate Chinese New Year and the end of exams.

The staff created a restaurant experience with table cloths, bamboo mats, plates, bowls and chop sticks. Plants and candles decorated the tables along with Chinese coins for prosperity.

On the morning of the event, the girls got to order their food and some extra dishes were ordered by the staff to include: crispy seaweed, sweet and sour prawns, aromatic crispy duck and salt and pepper squid, so that the girls could experience food that would not usually be eaten within their culture.

During the meal, discussions were had around Chinese New Year and the giving of coins or red envelopes with money in them. All girls conducted themselves with respect and equality and left the room with the gift of a charm, made for them by staff, to remind them of their experience. The girls also thanked the student who had come up with the idea.

YPA has a good understanding and built a rapport with my son. He has been happy and well cared for to the point where he has met his full potential and thrived. The right balance and structure has provided for my son’s complex needs. Thank you for your continuous support.  Parent
