Maths in Action at Windsor Racecourse!
Year 9 and 10 students from Young People’s Academy visited Windsor Racecourse for an exciting “Maths in Action” trip. The students took a look behind the scenes at the racecourse, and how maths is used in an every day setting.
The students went into the jockeys’ weighing room where they learnt about the weights for different races, they had the opportunity to weigh themselves and then visit the sauna for a short time to experience how jockeys lose weight before a race.
After this, they looked at the size of the horses and how much room they need. They measured the length of the parade ring and how many horses would fit on it. They examined the equipment the jockeys wear and everyone got to try on a jersey in different race colours.
Finally they learnt the rules of horse racing, which was really engaging and had everyone asking questions. The students really enjoyed the whole trip, and are hoping to go back again next year, maybe even to watch a race!
Ethan said “being here made maths a lot more fun! I really liked learning the rules of horse racing and now I know them, I really want to go and watch a race!”
